5 Reasons to Consider a New Role
While the world is slowly getting back to normal after two years of lockdowns, vaccines and self-isolation, many industries are still facing uncertainty. At The People Pod, we’ve noticed the turbulence that the Great Resignation has created for job-seekers everywhere.
If you feel secure in the job you’ve got, it might seem like an unthinkable risk to consider other roles. But if you’re quick to capitalise on uncertainty, it can turn into opportunity. And let’s face it, you’ll always be able to think of good reasons not to make life-changing decisions.
In case you’re still not convinced, we’ve put together five reasons why now might be the perfect time for you to think about a new job. It might be a new job in the same industry, or the same job in a new industry - whatever interests you, there has never been a better time.
Even if you’re happy where you are, there’s nothing to lose by seeing what else is out there.
Incentives
Several industries are facing shortages of workers, and are reacting by offering bigger incentives to talented candidates. This might include higher starting salaries, signing-on bonuses, flexible working or other benefits, financial and otherwise. Maybe your current job is offering similar incentives, but you may not have the same space to negotiate as an established employee. Uncertainty only lasts for so long, so if you’re thinking of moving, strike while the iron is hot.
Even if your industry isn’t facing personnel shortages, the COVID-19 pandemic changed how many workplaces function, and there may still be benefits to be gained by switching to a new one. If you’re willing to change industries or retrain for a role that is desperately needed, you might find that the world is your oyster.
Flexible working
Over the last couple of years, many more people have started working from home, whether on a full-time or part-time basis. With more companies offering these flexible arrangements now, you might be able to change jobs or even start a new career further afield, without having to worry about travelling to work or moving house to be closer to your job.
If you’ve already set up a home office, it’s easy to explore roles based anywhere in the country (or the world) with the confidence that you have everything you need to do the job.
Companies have had to adjust, which means that many are now more open to hiring someone they haven’t met in person, onboarding them remotely, and conducting meetings online. Depending on the role, this may be a short-term or permanent arrangement, so research carefully before you apply.
Personal development
Every workplace is different. You might have settled into a comfort zone where you feel like you know your job (or even your industry) inside out, and that’s great. Still, every workplace is different and each one can teach you something new, even if you are truly an expert at what you do. You should take care not to let your comfort zone become your comfort blanket.
You might feel the need for a change, but you could miss out on the chance to develop and hone your skills by keeping everything the same. A new job - or the same job at a new company - can boost your creativity and your productivity, and make you even better at the things you do best.
You might gain completely new skills that lead you onto a new career path, or just see the things you’re passionate about from a new perspective and develop even better ways to do the job you love.
Restrictions have eased
It is quite tough to make any predictions about the COVID-19 pandemic, but for the time being, things are as close to normal as they have been since 2019. Not all industries have recovered to the same degree, but the process of rebuilding or discovering a new normal is well underway for businesses throughout the UK.
So, if you have been waiting to see how things panned out, now is probably a good time to take stock and think about what the future looks like - not for the country, but for you.
If you’re vulnerable to the virus, or just concerned about passing it along, you don’t have to jump right in at the deep end. As we’ve said, remote working is still available in many places, so companies may be able to make accommodations for you.
You might surprise yourself
At The People Pod, we’re built on the idea that finding the right candidate for a job doesn’t only depend on the quality of their CV, or their combination of skills and experience. It’s about who they are as a person, too. If you’re not interested in a new job for professional reasons, a new role could offer personal fulfilment, new friends, or different ways to pursue your life goals.
Even if you haven’t thought seriously about moving jobs, you might be surprised to find what’s out there. You could find something you didn’t know you wanted, or feel suddenly inspired to do something differently. If you don’t find anything that interests you, you’ll know for certain that you’re in the right role, so there’s really nothing to lose.
